Basalt began as a railroad town and was, in fact, named Aspen Junction until 1895. The current name of Basalt was taken from the Basaltic rock formation now known as Basalt Mountain situated to the north of the town. Basalt has experienced dramatic growth over the past ten years as the billionaires have pushed the millionaires ‘down valley'. Basalt has a small town feel and the residents take pride in their community. Basalt has unique shops, galleries and restaurants.
